What is a Heat Pump and Why Choose This Technology?

A heat pump is an innovative and energy-efficient solution to heat, cool your home, and produce domestic hot water.
Unlike a traditional boiler that creates heat through combustion, a heat pump extracts heat from the environment – from outdoor air, the ground, or groundwater – and transfers it to your heating system or sanitary water.

How Does a Heat Pump Work?

The principle is simple:

  • Heat Extraction – The heat pump captures heat from the air, ground, or water, even at low temperatures.

  • Conversion and Boosting – Using a refrigerant and a compressor, this heat is raised to a higher temperature.

  • Distribution in Your Home – The heat is delivered through underfloor heating, radiators, or fan coil units.

This process uses electricity, but far less than the amount of heat it produces, making it a highly efficient and sustainable solution.

The Benefits of a Heat Pump

Energy Efficient – Up to 75% of the energy comes from free renewable sources.
Lower Energy Bills – Significant savings on your electricity costs.
Environmentally Friendly – Lower CO₂ emissions compared to gas or oil boilers.
Comfort – Provides heating, cooling, and hot water with one system.
Future-Proof – Ready for stricter environmental standards and energy regulations.

Heat Pump vs. Traditional Central Heating

Central heating with gas or oil relies on burning fossil fuels, which leads to CO₂ emissions and dependency on fluctuating energy prices.

A heat pump, on the other hand, uses renewable energy and only a small amount of electricity, drastically reducing your energy costs and environmental footprint.

What is Air Conditioning and Why is it Important?

Air conditioning, is much more than just cooling in the summer.
Modern AC systems not only keep your indoor temperature comfortable but also regulate humidity and improve air quality. Additionally, most units today can also heat, providing year-round comfort.

How Does Air Conditioning Work?

The principle is simple:

  • Cooling – The AC extracts heat from the indoor air and expels it outside. At the same time, the indoor air is cooled and dehumidified.

  • Heating – In reverse mode (heat pump principle), the unit draws heat from the outdoor air and brings it inside, even at low outdoor temperatures.

Thanks to this technology, modern air conditioning is energy-efficient and versatile, making it ideal for homes, offices, or commercial spaces.

The Benefits of Air Conditioning

Year-Round Comfort – Cooling in summer, heating in winter.
Fast Temperature Control – Enjoy a comfortable temperature within minutes.
Energy Efficient – Modern AC systems with heat pump technology consume less energy than traditional electric heating.
Better Air Quality – Filters remove dust, pollen, and allergens.
Flexibility – Suitable for a single room or an entire building (split or multi-split systems).

Airconditioning vs. Traditional Central Heating

Central heating warms the entire house but cannot cool it.

Air conditioning is multifunctional: cooling and heating, with lower energy costs during mid-seasons or mild winter days.

It’s ideal as a supplement to your existing heating system or as a complete solution for well-insulated homes.

Ventilation – Essential for a Healthy Indoor Climate

A well-functioning ventilation system is essential for your health and comfort.
In modern, well-insulated homes, indoor air quality can quickly deteriorate without adequate ventilation.
Moisture, CO₂, dust particles, and harmful substances remain trapped inside, which can lead to mold growth, unpleasant odors, and health issues.

A ventilation system ensures a constant supply of fresh air and the removal of polluted air, so your home always maintains a healthy indoor climate.

Why is ventilation so important?

Health – Prevents headaches, allergies, and moisture problems
Comfort – Fresh air without having to open windows
Energy efficiency – Modern systems recover heat, reducing your energy consumption
Prevents mold and dampness – Extends the lifespan of your home

The future of ventilation in Flanders

The Flemish government is imposing increasingly strict requirements for energy efficiency and indoor air quality.
New and renovated homes must comply with EPB standards, where ventilation plays a crucial role.

What does this mean in practice?
✔ Ventilation is mandatory in new builds and major renovations
Balanced ventilation (system D) with heat recovery is becoming the standard in energy-efficient homes

Why is it essential to have your oil tank inspected?

The Flemish Government has imposed strict regulations to prevent soil and groundwater contamination. This is why it is important to have your oil tanks regularly inspected and certified.
👉 We also recommend consulting the official Flemish Government website.

1. Inspection before use

Every new tank must be inspected by a certified technician or environmental expert after installation but before being put into service.

Tanks with a capacity of 6,000 liters (5,000 kg) or more must also be reported to the local municipal authority and may require an environmental permit.

2. Periodic inspections after commissioning

The frequency of inspections depends on the volume, location, and installation type:

Less than 6,000 L (5,000 kg)
Underground: every 5 years.
Aboveground: since March 1, 2009, no mandatory periodic inspection, unless the last certificate indicates an earlier date.

6,000 L or more (≥ 5,000 kg)
Underground: limited inspection every 2 years, annually if in a water catchment or protection zone; thorough inspection every 15 years (every 10 years in protected zones).
Aboveground: limited inspection every 3 years; for tanks > 20,000 L, an additional thorough inspection every 20 years.

What is the procedure?

Inspection by a certified technician
Certificate & identification plate – After the inspection, you receive a certificate and the tank is labeled as follows:

  • Green label: tank is compliant and can be used.

  • Orange label: not fully compliant but no immediate risk; can be filled for up to 6 months and then re-inspected.

  • Red label: non-compliant and risk of contamination; filling is prohibited. The situation must be reported within 14 days and repaired before a new inspection.

All certificates and labels include the technician’s name and certification number, inspection date, and the date of the next required inspection (if applicable).

Why is this important?

Environmental protection – Prevent leaks and contamination.
Safety and functionality – A valid certificate guarantees the tank is in good condition.
Legal compliance – Non-compliance may result in fines or refusal of fuel delivery by your supplier.
Property transfer – A valid certificate is required when selling or transferring ownership.

Summary: When to inspect?

✔ New tank → Before use
✔ < 6,000 L underground → Every 5 years
✔ < 6,000 L aboveground → Only initial inspection (unless otherwise stated)
✔ ≥ 6,000 L underground → Every 2 years (annually in protection zones), full inspection every 15 years
✔ ≥ 6,000 L aboveground → Every 3 years, full inspection every 20 years for tanks > 20,000 L

Conclusion

Regular inspections of your oil tank are essential for environmental protection, safety, and legal compliance.

Why Is It Important to Have Your Chimney Regularly Cleaned?

A well-maintained chimney is essential for safety, efficiency, and is legally required when you have central heating. During the use of your heating system (wood, oil, or gas), soot, tar, and other deposits accumulate in the flue. If these are not removed in time, it can lead to serious consequences:

1. Fire Safety

Soot and creosote inside the chimney are highly flammable. A buildup of these substances can cause a chimney fire, which can spread rapidly and cause severe damage.

2. Better Performance of Your Heating System

A dirty chimney reduces the draft of exhaust gases, forcing your system to work harder. This means higher energy costs and increased wear and tear.

3. Health and Safety

Poor venting can lead to backflow of smoke or CO (carbon monoxide) into your home. Carbon monoxide is odorless, colorless, and can be deadly. A cleaned chimney helps prevent this risk.

4. Legal Obligation and Insurance Requirements

In Belgium, it is mandatory to have the chimney of a central heating system running on solid or liquid fuel cleaned annually by a certified technician.
For gas installations, it is every two years in Flanders.

In case of fire, your insurance company will often require a valid cleaning certificate. Without this, compensation may be refused.

👉 Please refer to the official communication of the Flemish Government:
vlaanderen.be – Chimney Cleaning

How Often Should It Be Done?

✔ Wood, coal, pellets → At least once a year
✔ Heating oil (fuel oil) → Once a year (mandatory)
✔ Gas installations → Every two years (mandatory in Flanders)

Conclusion

Regular chimney cleaning is not only mandatory, but it also ensures safety, lower costs, and peace of mind.
We provide professional chimney cleaning during the maintenance of your heating system.

This regulation applies only to the Flemish Region.
